Wendy’s story

An elderly woman on a sofa talking to her daughter

Wendy contacted Compass CHC for advice when her mother was moved from home into a nursing home.

After completing a review of her situation we recommended to the family that her mother could be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. We gathered the available care records, and drafted detailed representations to support the case that her needs were primarily health needs. On behalf of the family we instigated the NHS assessment process.

A few days before the checklist, her mother fell and fractured her pubic rami, which meant she went from being able to mobilise independently to being nursed in bed or a chair. She was also in significant pain due to the fracture.

With the assistance of our advocate, the checklist was passed and a full NHS assessment was triggered.

Around three weeks later, a full assessment was completed. A multidisciplinary team was present, with a nurse assessor and social worker. Wendy’s mother had an over-arching diagnosis of dementia, but she also had significant psychological and emotional needs caused by paranoid hallucinations which meant she would not leave her room and would often not engage with care staff. In addition, she was still immobile and experiencing pain from her fracture pubic rami which meant she could no longer independently mobilise or reposition. Given her cognitive impairment and significant psychological and emotional needs, there was significant complexity in her care needs.

With the assistance of our advocate, the most appropriate levels of need were recorded during the assessment and the complexity and intensity of care required was highlighted, which ultimately led to funding being secured.

Wendy commented:

“I absolutely could not have gone through this minefield on my own and your knowledge of whom to keep contacting to move things forward I am sure played a very important part in securing this outcome. An outcome which I still can’t quite believe!

So thank you all so much for your assistance in this matter and in particular a huge thank you to my advocate Katherine, her calm support and expertise throughout both meetings was invaluable.”
