Securing continuing healthcare funding for a client living with PSP

Elderly woman being helped to walk by a carer

Following a Decision Support Tool (DST) assessment, we secured continuing healthcare funding for a client living with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) by presenting clear evidence that her needs were complex, deteriorating and unpredictable.

Marjorie was living with PSP, a progressive neurological condition that had begun to affect multiple areas of daily life. The evidence from care records showed significant challenges across nutrition, mobility, cognition and medication management. We presented the full picture of need in a clear and structured case that showed the full extent of her care needs, leading to a successful funding decision.

The challenge

The client had ongoing weight loss, increasing mobility difficulties, cognitive impairment and time-sensitive medication needs, all of which made day-to-day care more complex and increased the level of supervision required.

How Compass CHC helped

We attended the DST assessment, reviewed the clinical evidence and prepared written representations showing that the client had a primary health need.

  • We highlighted the impact of cognitive impairment on the client’s ability to recognise and communicate her needs
  • We demonstrated how reduced mobility increased the complexity of care across other areas, including continence and skin integrity
  • We drew attention to the ongoing weight loss and the practical challenges of maintaining adequate nutrition
  • We also showed that the client’s condition was deteriorating and unpredictable, with increasing care needs over time as her PSP progressed.

The outcome

The decision meant that continuing healthcare funding was awarded and the client’s care home fees would be covered going forward.

Ewa Krzyszkowska, Advocacy Director said:

“This case is a strong example of why a careful, evidence-led approach matters. The overall picture clearly showed complex, deteriorating and unpredictable needs. By setting out that evidence clearly, we were able to help secure the funding our client needs for her ongoing care.”
